If you have noticed abnormal accumulations or loss of fat on certain parts of your body - or if you have already been diagnosed with lipohypertrophy or lipoatrophy, plastic surgery treatment may help. Dr. Nathan Brought of Southern Plastic and Reconstructive Surgical Institute is a board-certified surgeon who treats patients in the Nashville, TN region. As one of the most qualified lipodystrophy treatment plastic surgeons in Tennessee, Dr. Brought can help you regain the confident, healthy appearance you deserve.
What Is Lipodystrophy?
Lipodystrophy refers to a permanent, unwanted change in body fat distribution that can result from genetic or acquired problems. Lipohypertrophy occurs when fat accumulates around the organs, breasts, back, neck or as lumps under the skin. Lipoatrophy is the unwanted loss of fat in the face, legs, buttocks, arms or feet. The fat reduction is sometimes so severe that veins appear prominent. The effects of lipodystrophy can include depression, social isolation and low self-esteem. It can also lead to a refusal to take necessary medications - a serious problem, because lipodystrophy is a side effect of HIV treatment.
There are other potential complications as well. Accumulating triglycerides and cholesterol as a result of the abnormal amount of fat in the blood can lead to heart attack, stroke and a damaged pancreas. Resulting insulin resistance can lead to diabetes. Lactic acidosis, a life-threatening condition, may also occur.
Although lipodystrophy is commonly associated with HIV, there are diverse contributing factors. Heredity, changes in metabolism, changes in hormones, lifestyle changes and other issues can cause lipodystrophy.
Treating Lipodystrophy
Dr. Brought may be able to help you remedy the effects of lipodystrophy. Dr. Brought will give you a thorough examination, take the time to understand your medical history and suggest the techniques that are likely to help you achieve your goals. Facial reconstruction, liposuction, fat transfer and implant surgery are all possibilities, depending on your goals. He may also recommend a cosmetic filler, such as Juvederm.
Although these surgical and non-surgical procedures are safe for many people, not every interested patient is a candidate for lipodystrophy treatment. Surgical candidates should be in general good health and have the resources to withstand a longer recovery. In addition, if the condition has been caused by medication, it's important to understand that it may come back if the medication is continued because of medical necessity.
